Maltitol it is a polyalcohol or polyol with sweetening power, it is a derivative of maltose, in turn generally obtained from corn and wheat. It has a low cariogenic power and a low glycemic index.
Maltitol is commonly used as a sweetener, whose sweetening power is around 75% of the common sugar (sucrose), the caloric intake is about 50% compared to sucrose.
The intake of food / drinks containing maltitol in substitution of sugar contributes to the maintenance of the mineralization of the teeth and induces a lower increase in blood glucose after ingestion.
Maltitol can be used as a sweetener to replace sugar in: chewing gum, marzipan, pharmaceutical tablets, baked goods and chocolate production.
